Back in the 70s, John Ryan married Laury Geyer at Vishnu. The group photo was on the cover of Sunrise magazine. Have you ever seen this ?

This is a response to a message titled: "Vishnu Open House"

A friend of mine and I tried to come to Vishnu yesterday in the early afternoon. I am familiar with the area having grown up near Carthage, but we were never able to find Vishnu and I didn't see this site until late yesterday morning. We ended up somehow (vs. bad directions found on the net) south of Tennessee on a county road that dead ended. We chose to hike back into some pasture land that had an old dirt road and see if we may have found Vishnu, but nope. What we did find was an old abandoned buggy frame and an old iron/plank bridge that deadended into a cow path. The bridge crossed the LaMoine River though. Still we got some good nature walking in and some cool photos of another place long forgotten. Could you please email me the next time that you are having a gathering at Vishnu Springs with the right directions? Thank you Izzy Izzy1895@hotmail.com

I went there in the late 1980's with some grad student friends of mine. We knew it was watched over, so we were stealth and brought our cameras. It didn't have the severe graffiti on the interior walls as it does now. And I don't think any vandals had painted the fireplace red. The building was very solid, and appeared still fix-upable. I DO remember seeing a stage, (for the 1970's bands?) and a gorgeous four poster antique wood bed from the 1880's on the second floor, an old teapot, and a headstone from a very old grave. I hope WIU can, if not restore the old hotel, then at least preserve it or slow down its deterioration.

I tried to visit Vishnu Springs yesterday with my ex-wife, just to see the hotel and see if we could find any remnants of the town and maybe even drink the spring water. We avoided the main (barred) entrance and tried instead to enter from the east, through a field and brush. Unfortunately we were stopped by a guy on a 4-wheeler. While not hostile, he told us there was no chance of visiting, and that those who enter will be prosecuted. He also said there are reportedly cameras around the hotel to catch trespassers. I guess my question is, are there any more open houses scheduled? I don't want to break the law or cause any problems, but it would truly be interesting to see this piece of almost-forgotten history.
